Summary

Persons are typically suggested to interact in social contact to deal with the expertise of loneliness and enhance well-being. However are the moments of loneliness really extra bearable when spent in different folks’s firm? On this analysis, we proposed and examined two conflicting theoretical accounts concerning the position of social contact: social contact is related to a stronger (the amplifying account) or with a weaker (the buffering account) damaging impact of loneliness on psychological well-being. Analyses of three datasets collected utilizing ecological momentary assessments (Npeople = 3,035) revealed that the damaging affiliation between loneliness and well-being was stronger when individuals have been with others than alone, per the amplifying account. Additional, when individuals skilled excessive ranges of loneliness, being with others was related to the identical or with even a decrease degree of well-being than being alone. These findings counsel that merely spending time with others (vs. alone) isn’t related to a diminished burden of loneliness and will even backfire.
