Ellison’s Cave is a pit cave situated in Walker County, on Pigeon Mountain within the Appalachian Plateaus of Northwest Georgia. It’s the twelfth deepest cave within the United States and options the deepest, unobstructed pit within the continental US named Improbable Pit. The cave is over 12 miles lengthy and extends 1063 toes vertically.[1]

Ellison’s options plenty of underground vertical pitches together with the 2 deepest pits within the contiguous United States: Improbable (586 toes) and Unbelievable (440 toes).[2] These two pits lie on reverse sides of the cave. Close by and parallel to Improbable are Smokey I (500 toes), Smokey II (262 toes), and different deep pitches.


Ellison’s is a solution cave within the Ridge and Valley geologic region of northwest Georgia and lies inside a bedrock fault in Pigeon Mountain. Through the Ordovician Period, tectonic subduction answerable for forming the Appalachians left plenty of seismically energetic fault lines stretching from northern Alabama to japanese Tennessee.
